We think of “rest” as something that either happens to us, or doesn’t happen to us. In this series, we’ll explore rest as an intentional practice and an art. For queer folks in particular, much of the discrimination we face is directed towards our physical bodies– how they look, and what we do with them. This lived reality can lead to a sense of hypervigilance and “guarding” within our bodies, which can be hard to release. Through this series, we’ll learn how to deeply listen and respond to our body’s desires, how to intentionally practice rest, and how to be in alignment with the changing seasons.

Here's what we’ll explore over the course of five weeks:

  • Embracing Seasonal Transitions: We’ll acknowledge the changing seasons and their impact on our physical and emotional well-being. That can look like cozying up for hibernation in the northern hemisphere, or seeking relief from the heat in the southern hemisphere. Either way, we’ll align with the natural rhythms of the earth.

  • Releasing Tension: We’ll find gentle movement to warm up joints and muscles as we prepare the body for relaxation. Noticing areas of tension and understanding what habits may contribute to muscle clenching helps us understand our bodies a little better. This awareness allows us to release tension and cultivate relaxation in our daily lives.

  • The Practice of Softening: Softening the body and mind helps release tension and promotes a sense of ease and “okayness.” Gathering pillows, blankets, and a candle sets the stage for a cozy and comforting environment. These props can enhance the practice by providing physical support and creating a “safe enough” resting place. Learn how to ease into a restful asana and embrace quiet.

This practice offers a holistic approach to the art of rest by incorporating gentle movement, restorative asana (postures), meditation, and pranayama. It encourages us to connect with our bodies, release tension, and find practices to transition into the next season.

This series is open to anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community. Beginners are most welcome, and these classes are trauma informed. You may join the class live, or practice via recordings sent to you after each class. The spotlight will be on Sasha, with no one else’s video/audio recorded. You will have access to the recordings for 30 days after the series ends.

Your Guide: Sasha Sigel (she/her) is a white, queer person. She honors yoga as a pathway to self healing + liberation, as well as collective transformation. She invites a deeper relationship to ourselves, communities, and the world through this practice. Sasha celebrates exploration and personalization of the practice, and honors the student as the expert on their own body. She trained in yoga for trauma with The Trauma Center at JRI’s Trauma Sensitive Yoga program, and Leslie Howard's Pelvic Floor Yoga program. Learn more at sashasigel.com
